Laser Tattoo Removal FAQ's

What is the difference between Active Q-Switch and other tattoo removal lasers?

Not all lasers are the the same and not all will safely remove tattoos, particularly professional and multi-coloured ones.

Active Q-Switch Laser is specifically designed to eliminate unwanted pigmentation on the skin safely and efficiently.

Unlike Passive Q-Switch Laser, Active Q-Switch Laser has proven to be more successful in the removal of professional tattoos, as well as eliminating Indian ink amateur tattoos.

Active Q-Switch works effectively against ‘stubborn’ pigments, such as yellow, purple and pastels, so you can rest assured your tattoo colour will not get in the way of your treatment.

How does the treatment work?

When the skin is tattooed, ink particles are injected in the dermis (deeper layer of the skin). Due to their large size, the body cannot absorb them and the tattoo becomes permanent.

The Active Q-Switch laser generates a very quick pulse of high-powered light that is absorbed by the ink tattoo particles siting deep inside the skin. As their temperature increases, the pigments break down into smaller pieces.

This makes easier for the body to absorb and eliminate the ink, resulting in the gradual fading of the tattoo as the treatment progresses.

What results can I expect?

You can expect your tattoo to become practically unnoticeable, although it is possible that a small amount of pigment remains on your skin.

White is the most challenging colour for any type of laser, so this is more likely to happen if there are any white areas on your tattoo.

As with any aesthetic procedure, results and length of treatment may vary from person to person and the length of your treatment will depend on the size, colour and age of your tattoo.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on several factors including the density and colour of the pigments, and the age of the tattoo.

Amateur tattoos are easier to remove and normally take 1 to 6 treatments. For professional tattoos, length of treatment increases considerably, taking up to 15 sessions in some cases.

Treatment sessions are usually spaced 6 to 10 weeks apart, but your dermatologist will determine what the best frequency is depending on your case.

How many sessions does tattoo sleeve removal take?

Due to their greater size, tattoo sleeve removal is normally a longer treatment. This will depend on the pigments used and how old the tattoos.

Patients are normally happy to undertake a longer treatment, as it makes sleeve tattoos practically invisible.

How many sessions will I need if I just want to fade my tattoo to cover it with a new one?

Some people only want to fade their tattoo to cover it with a new design. In this case, expected results can be achieved in as little as two treatments.

Your dermatologist will be able to advise the number of sessions needed during your consultation.

How long does each treatment take?

Treatment times vary depending on the size of the tattoo, ranging from 10 to 30 minutes. After treatment, a soothing lotion and a light dressing are applied on the treated area, which can take several minutes.

Does it hurt?

Fractional Laser treatment is mildly uncomfortable, but no anaesthetic is required. Most people describe the sensation as a hot pinprick or the flick of an elastic band. We will apply a soothing lotion and a light dressing to minimise discomfort.

Despite this, the area will feel tender for a few hours and can be red and swollen for up to 2 days.

Is it any recovery time needed?

The treatment requires minimal downtime, but you should avoid unprotected sun exposure for at least 30 days. You should also wait about 48 hours before using makeup, taking a hot shower or going to the gym.

Can Q-Switch laser cause side effects?

Following treatment, it is normal for the skin to become lighter or darker than normal, but this generally fades quickly. There may be a loss of natural tanning ability in the treated area, which usually improves with time.

Some tattoos can form a graze or blister, these must be left to heal naturally to avoid changes to the skin texture and scarring.

Is Q-Switch Laser safe?

Q-Switch Laser treatments are considered safe. However, some side effects are possible, including temporary lightening or darkening of the treated area and small blisters and grazes that can lead to skin texture changes and scarring.

As exposure to laser light can damage the eye, we provide protective eyewear to avoid any risk.

Am I suitable for treatment?

Laser Tattoo Removal is not recommended if you have a dark skin colour, as it can leave noticeable patches of lighter skin. In this case, advanced electrolysis is a much more reliable option.

Initial consultation and test patch

During your initial consultation, one of our dermatologists will assess your medical history to confirm suitability. Your clinician will also do a test patch to ensure it reacts positively to the treatment.

This will also be a great opportunity to ask questions or share any concerns you may have.

Before proceeding, you will also be asked to sign a consent form.
