Laser Stretch Mark Removal FAQ's

What is ResurFACE Fractional Laser?

Fractional Laser is an ablative treatment, which means it is used to remove the damaged areas of the skin and accelerate the skin’s natural renewal and reparation process.

Unlike other more aggressive treatments such as CO2 laser, ResurFACE has very few side effects and requires a much shorter downtime period.

How does the treatment work?

A ResurFACE handpiece sends short pulses of laser energy into the scar tissue, caused by your skin being stretched. The increase in temperature breaks down the damaged tissue, eliminating the outer layers of dead skin.

Simultaneously it stimulates fibroblast cells, responsible for collagen and elastin production, triggering the skin’s natural healing and renewal process. As the treatment, progresses the stretch marks gradually fade away, as newer healthier skin replaces them.

What results can I expect?

After undergoing treatment, you can expect a much more even skin tone, with a substantial reduction in the colour and appearance of your stretch marks.

For many patients, stretch marks appear much smoother and less visible after just three treatments. However, as with any aesthetic procedure, results and length of treatment may vary from person to person and will depend on the size and depth of your lesions.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of stretch marks removal treatments varies from person to person, but normally fractional laser can achieve outstanding results in 3 to 5 sessions.

The treatments are spaced out every 4 to 6 week, but your dermatologist will determine what the best frequency is, depending on your case.

How long does each treatment take?

Treatment times vary depending on the size and severity of your stretch marks, ranging from 10 to 40 minutes. The skin must be cooled after each course of treatment, which can take several minutes.

Does it hurt?

Fractional Laser treatment is mildly uncomfortable, but no anaesthetic is required. Many people experience a warm, heating sensation, with some mild stinging. We will cool down your skin to minimise discomfort.

Is it any recovery time needed?

Healing normally takes between 3 and 10 days, but this will depend on the size of the area treated and the depth of the Stretch marks. In some cases, full recovery can take as long as three weeks.

During this time, you must also follow a skin-cleansing routine as indicated by doctor

While you don’t need to be at home during the entire recovery process, you should avoid unprotected sun exposure for at least 30 days. You should not wash the treated area for 24 hours, and wait 2 to 3 days before taking a hot shower or doing exercise.

Can Fractional Laser cause side effects?

Following treatment, it is normal to experience a mild sunburnt sensation for a few hours and the skin may be red for a few days. This is a positive sign as it means that the deeper layers of the skin are healing.

Swelling is a relatively common side effect, but it normally resolves in two to three days.

While the healing process occurs, you may also notice the skin in the treated area looks darker. This can last from three to 10 days, during which your skin will naturally exfoliate as if you had mild sunburn.

As with any aesthetic treatment, other unwanted side effects are rare but possible. These include the appearance of small blisters and temporary changes to skin pigmentation.

Is Fractional Laser safe?

Fractional Laser treatments are considered safe. However, some minor side effects such as swelling, small blisters or temporary colour changes in the treated area can occur.

As exposure to laser light can damage your eyes, we will provide protective eyewear to avoid any risk.

Am I suitable for treatment?

Almost everyone can be treated, but best results are normally achieved on people with fair skin. Dark skinned people should avoid fractional laser as it could result in permanent pigmentation.

If you skin is dark or tanned, microneedling will be a much alternative.

Initial consultation and test patch

During your initial consultation, one of our dermatologist will assess your medical history to confirm suitability. Your clinician will also do a test patch on your skin to ensure it reacts positively to the treatment.

This will also be a great opportunity to ask any questions or share any concerns you may have.

Before proceeding, you will also be asked to sign a consent form.
