IPL Rosacea Treatment FAQ's

What is Intense Pulsed Light?

Intense Pulsed Light is light energy. When applied on the skin, it helps improve its colour and texture, making it look more even.

IPL is a non-invasive, non-laser way to eliminate the visual signs of rosacea, including red spots and spider veins on face, neck and décolleté.

IPL can also be used in a variety of treatments including: acne, age spots, wrinkles, etc.

How does the treatment work?

Our IPL rosacea treatment works by applying light on the skin using a handpiece. As the enlarged and broken blood vessels caused by rosacea absorb the light, their temperature increases. The rise in heat destroys the blood vessel, which are reabsorbed by the body leaving little or no trace of the original lesion.

What results can I expect?

You can expect a substantial reduction in facial redness, visible red veins and brighter skin form the first session. Although, at least three are recommended for permanent results.

However, as with any aesthetic procedure, experience, results and length of treatment may vary from person to person. This will depend on the number and size of your existing rosacea related lesions.

Which types of red veins can be treated with IPL?

Most red skin lesions can be treated very successfully using Intense Pulsed Light. These include facial thread veins, spider veins and red spots caused by rosacea, and port wine stains. Depending on the lesions, leg vessels can also respond well to treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies from person to person and will be affected by the number and size of the lesions.

Although you will experience a substantial improvement from the first treatment, 3 to 5 treatment courses are normally needed for permanent results. If you only have small lesions, they may clear in just a single session.

We normally wait 4 to 6 weeks between treatments, but your dermatologist will decide what the best frequency is depending on your case.

How long does each treatment take?

The duration of each treatment can take from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the type and size of lesion. We will cooled down following each session, which can take several minutes.

Does it hurt?

The treatment is mildly uncomfortable, but no anaesthetic is required. Sensations vary, but most people describe it as a very quick hot pinprick.
Immediately after treatment, your skin may feel warm for a few hours. We will apply a calming gel on the treated area to cool your skin and ease any discomfort.

Is it any recovery time needed?

You will be able to return to regular activity almost immediately after treatment. However, you should avoid unprotected sun exposure for at least 30 days. It is also recommended to wait about 48 hours before wearing any makeup, taking a hot shower or doing exercise.

Can it cause side effects?

Normally, the treated area feels warm for a few hours, but in some rare cases delicate skin areas such as the cheeks or décolleté can be red and slightly swollen for up to 48 hours.

Though very rare, there is a chance small blisters may form and there could be temporary lightening or darkening of the skin.

Is Intense Light Therapy safe?

Intense Pulsed Light treatments are considered safe, but some minor side effects such as transient blisters or temporary colour changes can happen.
Although IPL is light therapy, it has the same potential to damage the eye as laser. During the treatment, we will provide protective eyewear to avoid any risk.

Am I suitable for treatment?

Almost everyone can be treated, but best results are normally achieved on people with fair skin. They also tend to experience little to no side effects.

IPL is not recommended if your skin is dark or tanned, in which case electrolysis or Dermapen are much better options.

Initial consultation and test patch

During your initial consultation, one of our dermatologist will look at your medical history to confirm suitability. Your clinician will also do a test patch on your skin to ensure it reacts positively to the treatment.

This will also be a great opportunity for you to ask any questions or share any concerns you may have.

Before proceeding, you will also be asked to sign a consent form.
