Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing FAQ's

What is ResurFACE Fractional Laser?

Fractional Laser is an ablative treatment. This means it removes damaged skin areas and accelerates the skin’s natural renewal and reparation process.

The lesions disappear from the treated area as new healthy layers of sink appear.

Unlike more aggressive treatments such as CO2 laser, ResurFACE has very few side effects and requires a much shorter downtime period.

How does the treatment work?

A ResurFACE handpiece is used to send short pulses of laser energy into tiny sections of the skin. The increase in temperature breaks down the old wrinkled tissue, eliminating the outer layers of dead skin.

Simultaneously, the light stimulates fibroblast cells, responsible for collagen and elastin production, triggering the skin’s natural healing and renewal process. As the treatment, progresses, lines and wrinkles gradually fade away, as new healthier skin replaces it.

What results can I expect?

After undergoing fractional laser skin resurfacing, you can expect a more youthful and radiant skin. Patients normally experience a considerable reduction in the depth and number of wrinkles after just three treatments.

However, as with any aesthetic procedure results and length of treatment may vary from person to person and will depend on the size and depth of your lesions.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies from person to person, but normally a fractional laser can achieve outstanding results after 3 to 5 sessions.

The treatments are spaced out every 4 to 6 week, but your dermatologist will determine what the best frequency is, depending on your case.

How long does each treatment take?

Treatment times vary depending on the amount and depth of the existing wrinkles, ranging from 10 to 40 minutes. The skin must be cooled after each course of treatment, which can take several minutes.

Does it hurt?

The treatment is mildly uncomfortable, but no anaesthetic is required. Many people experience a warm sensation, with some mild stinging. We will cool down your skin to minimise discomfort.

Is it any recovery time needed?

ResurFACE requires a much shorter downtime period than other resurfacing treatments (i.e. CO2 laser).

After each session, your skin will look sunburned or darker. Many people plan their treatments close to the weekend for this reason.

This normally resolves in two or three days, but the heling process can take up to 10 days. During this time, you must also follow a skin-cleansing routine as indicated by doctor.

While you don’t need to be at home during the entire recovery process, you should avoid unprotected sun exposure for at least 30 days. You should also wait 24 hours before washing your face and about 2 to 3 days before using makeup, taking a hot shower or doing exercise.

If you want to enjoy your rejuvenated skin for longer, we also recommend avoiding direct sunlight and use sunblock regularly. This will help you avoid new winkles caused by sun exposure.

Can fractional laser cause side effects?

Following treatment, it is normal to experience a mild sunburnt sensation for a few hours and the skin may be red for a few days. This is a positive sign as it means that the deeper layers of the skin are healing.

Swelling is a relatively common side effect, but it normally resolves in two to three days.

While the healing process occurs, you may also notice the skin in the treated area looks darker. This can last from three to 10 days, during which your skin will naturally exfoliate as if you had mild sunburn.

As with any aesthetic treatment, other unwanted side effects are rare but possible. These include the appearance of small blisters and temporary changes to skin pigmentation.

Is fractional laser safe?

Fractional Laser treatments are considered safe. However, some minor side effects such as swelling, small blisters or temporary colour changes in the treated area can occur.

As exposure to laser light can damage your eyes, we provide protective eyewear to avoid any risk.

Am I suitable for treatment?

Almost everyone can be treated, but best results are normally achieved on people with fair skin. Dark skinned people should avoid fractional laser as it could result in permanent pigmentation.

If you skin is dark or tanned, microneedling will be a much alternative.

Initial consultation and test patch

During your initial consultation, one of our dermatologist will assess your medical history to confirm suitability. Your clinician will also do a test patch on your skin to ensure it reacts positively to the treatment.

This will also be a great opportunity to ask any questions or share any concerns you may have.

Before proceeding, you will also be asked to sign a consent form.
