Fractional Laser Scar Removal FAQ's

What is ResurFACE Fractional Laser?

Fractional Laser is an ablative treatment, which means it is used to remove the damaged areas of the skin and accelerate the skin’s natural renewal and reparation process.

Unlike other more aggressive treatments, such as CO2 laser, ResurFACE has very few side effects and requires a much shorter downtime period.

How does the treatment work?

A ResurFACE handpiece is used to target tiny sections of the skin with laser light, increasing the temperature and removing some of the outer layers of dead skin. As the heat penetrates deeper into the skin, it stimulates the production of collagen, which renews and repairs the damaged area.

What results can I expect?

After undergoing a scar removal treatment, you can expect much smoother and brighter skin, with a substantial reduction in the colour and appearance of your scars.

For many patients, the scar tissue appears much smoother and less visible after just three treatments. However, as with any aesthetic procedure results and length of treatment may vary from person to person.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of fractional laser scar removal treatments varies but normally fractional laser can achieve outstanding results after 3 to 5 sessions.

The treatments are spaced out every 4 to 6 week, but your dermatologist will determine what the best frequency is, depending on your case.

How long does each treatment take?

Treatment times vary depending on the type of scars and the area being treated, ranging from 10 to 40 minutes. The skin must be cooled after each course of treatment, which can take several minutes.

Does it hurt?

Fractional Laser treatment is mildly uncomfortable, but no anaesthetic is required. Many people experience a warm sensation, with some mild stinging, but we will cool down your skin to minimise discomfort.

Is it any recovery time needed?

Healing normally takes between 3 and 10 days, but this will depend on the size of the treated area and depth of the scars. During this time, you must also follow a skin-cleansing routine as indicated by a doctor.

While you don’t need to be at home during the entire recovery process, you should avoid unprotected sun exposure for at least 30 days. You should also wait 24 hours before washing your face and about 2 to 3 days before using makeup, taking a hot shower or doing exercise.

Can Fractional Laser cause side effects?

Following a treatment, it is normal to experience a mild sunburnt sensation for a few hours and the skin may be red for a few days. This is a positive sign as it means that the deeper layers of the skin are healing.

Swelling is a relatively common side effect, but it normally resolves in two to three days.

While the healing process occurs, you may also notice the skin in the treated area looks darker. This can last from three to 10 days, during which your skin will naturally exfoliate as if you had mild sunburn.

As with any aesthetic treatment, other unwanted side effects are rare but possible. These include the appearance of small blisters and temporary changes to skin pigmentation.

Is Fractional Laser safe?

Fractional Laser treatments are considered safe. However, some minor side effects such as swelling, small blisters or temporary colour changes in the treated area can happen.

As exposure to laser light can damage the eyes, we will provide protective eyewear to avoid any risk.

Am I suitable for treatment?

Almost everyone can be treated, but the best results are normally achieved on people with fair skin. Dark skinned people should avoid fractional laser as it can result in permanent pigmentation.

If you skin is dark or tanned, microneedling will be better suited for you.

Initial consultation and test patch

During your initial consultation, one of our dermatologists will look at your medical history to confirm suitability. Your clinician will also do a test patch to ensure it reacts positively to the treatment.

This will also be a great opportunity for you to ask any questions or share any concerns you may have.

Before proceeding, you will also be asked to sign a consent form.
