Dermapen Treatment

Dermapen Treatment

Dermapen Treatment is a collagen induction therapy for all skin types and tones, which uses microneedling to rejuvenate the skin with minimum downtime.

Dermapen stimulates the production of new collagen, which is necessary for the reduction of scars, stretch marks, enlarged pores, pigmentation, wrinkles, red veins and other skin conditions.

Microneedling is also a great alternative to high-energy light treatments, such as IPL or laser, for people with darker skin tones.

Dermapen Treatment FAQ's

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure using tiny needles to puncture the skin. This causes little injuries that heal in a day or two, this stimulates the skin’s natural healing and renewal process, “tricking” it into producing new collagen.

What is Dermapen used for?

Dermapen offers outstanding results in the treatment of:

• Sun damage
• Wrinkles
• Hyperpigmentation
• Rosacea
• Enlarged Pores
• Scarring
• Stretch marks
• Alopecia and hair regeneration

Can Dermapen improve alopecia?

Dermapen is also effective for alopecia and general hair regeneration. The process works in much the same way. As the wound heals, it stimulates blood circulation and increases the nutrients reaching the hair follicles, combined with the stimulation of proteins in the area, this can result in new hair growth.

How does the treatment work?

The Dermapen Treatment involves microneedling using a pen as opposed to a roller.

As the pen is passed over the treated area, it inserts microneedles into the epidermis and the dermis. This leaves small puncture wounds that trigger the body’s healing response and encourage skin cell renewal in the area.

While the body repairs the skin, it increases the production of collagen and elastin. This process causes an immediate plumping of the area. As the body repairs the skin, it will eliminate the lesion that existed before the treatment.

What results can I expect?

After treatment, you can expect a substantial reduction of the skin blemishes prior to the treatment. The overall tone and texture of your skin should improve, giving a more even youthful look.

Tightening of the skin should also increase over the following months, as new collagen is produced within the dermis.

However, as with any aesthetic procedure, results and length of treatment vary from person to person.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies from person to person, but normally three to six sessions are recommended for best results.

We normally wait 4 to 6 weeks between treatments, but your dermatologist will decide what the best frequency is depending on your case.

How long does each treatment take?

A Dermapen session typically takes between 30 and 45 minutes. The duration of each treatment will depend on the size of the area.

Does it hurt or will I bleed?

You may experience some minor discomfort during the treatment, but we can apply a numbing cream before the treatment to ease any pain. Pinpoint bleeding can occur during the treatment, but this is not ongoing.

The Dermapen requires minimal downtime and you will be able to return to regular activity almost immediately. However, as microneedling purposefully causes physical trauma on your skin, it is normal to experience redness and swelling after each treatment. This normally goes away in one or two days.

Is any recovery time needed?

You will be able to return to regular activity almost immediately after treatment. However, you should avoid unprotected sun exposure, using sunbeds, taking a hot shower, using the sauna or doing exercise for five to seven days.

It is also recommended to use mineral makeup, as this will not congest the skin and will be absorbed into the body.

Can Dermapen cause side effects?

Immediately after your treatment you can expect to feel heat and swelling in the area. This is normal and will reduce after a couple of days.

You may also experience dryness or flaking of the skin. This is also a normal reaction, and it means the treatment has boosted your cellular turnover, removing older dead skin cells. If this happens, do not scratch or pick your skin. It will return to normal after a few days.

Most people experience no other side effects, but as with any aesthetic treatment, minor side effects are possible. These include looking slightly sunburnt, and in very rare cases, light bruising or infection.

Is Dermapen safe?

Microneedling is considered safe for most people who are in overall good health. Some minor side effects such as bruising or infection to the treated area can happen.

Am I suitable for treatment?

Almost everyone can be treated, including people with dark skin tones. However, the treatment is not recommended for people who use certain acne medications or pregnant women.

Why is Dermapen better suited for darker skin tones?

Unlike laser or Intense Pulsed Light, microneedling doesn’t involve heat.

The skin of people with darker complexions is able to absorb more light, due to a higher concentration of melanin (pigment that gives colour to our skin, hair, and eyes).

Using high-energy light therapies can increase the temperature of the skin to the point of causing adverse side effects and long-term damage. This include hyperpigmentation, blistering, burns and even scarring.

Advanced electrolysis is also a great alternative for people with dark complexions.

Initial consultation and test patch

During your initial consultation, one of our dermatologists assess your medical history to confirm suitability. Your clinician will also do a test patch on your skin to ensure it reacts positively to the treatment.

This will also be a great opportunity to ask questions or share any concerns you may have.
Before proceeding, you will also be asked to sign a consent form.
