Stretch Marks FAQ's

What causes stretch marks?

Stretch marks are long, narrow streaks or stripes of scarred tissue that occur when skin is stretched too quickly. Pregnancy, puberty, and rapid weight gain can cause stretch marks.

These sudden changes can rupture the collagen and elastin that support the skin. As the skin heals, stretch marks may appear.

Will I develop stretch marks after pregnancy?

Not everyone develops stretch marks after pregnancy, but it is very common. Stretch marks affect eight out of 10 women during pregnancy.

Whether you get them or not depends on your skin type, and how elastic it is. You may also have a higher risk if people in your family are prone to stretch marks.

What are the best anti-stretch mark treatments?

Many creams and lotions claim to reduce or remove stretch marks, but there is little evidence that these work to the required standard. For a substantial reduction in the look of and texture of your skin, advanced aesthetic treatments are needed.

Fractional laser resurfacing eliminates the superficial layers of dead skin, making stretch marks fade away after a few treatments.

Microneedling is also a treatment worth considering for those patients with darker or tanned skin which cannot undergo laser therapy.
