Acne Scars & Pockmarks FAQ's

What causes acne scars and pockmarks?

Pockmarks are often caused by acne, but can also be the result of other skin infections and chickenpox.

Acne scars are more likely to form when acne lesions occur deeper in the skin. In cases of severe acne, cysts form in the most internal layers of the skin. When healed, they leave a gap that causes the upper layers of the skin to sink, leaving visible pitted marks.

In non-severe cases of acne breakouts, squeezing and ‘pimple popping’ are the most common causes of permanent scarring.

Will my red acne marks turn into scars?

Not necessarily. For most people, the red areas around active acne lesions, such as whiteheads or pustules, normally fade away after a few days leaving no signs on the skin. However, pitted acne scarring is more likely to develop in severe acne cases such as cystic acne.

Although it can be tempting, do not pick or squeeze your spots or blackheads as this increases the risk for long-term scarring.

Can you get rid of acne scars permanently?

The appearance of acne scars and hyperpigmentation can be improved with topical treatments and skin peels. However, the most effective ways to permanently remove or substantially minimised acne scarring are fractional laser or microneedling.

The choice of treatment will depend on the level and type of scarring you have. Your dermatologists will help you decide what is the best solution is after looking at your case.

Can acne cause long-term hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation (red/brown marks) is a consequence of the skin inflammation caused by acne lesions. The skin responds to the injury by producing an increased amount of melanin, creating darker patches on the skin, which normally fade away after a few days.

In some cases, acne related pigmentation can be stubborn and require treatment in order to be eliminated.
